Once The Force Unleashed was announced, it really appealed to me. It focuses on real-time Jedi lightsaber combat with over the top force powers at your disposal.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is probably one of my favorite Star Wars games to date, just behind Knights of the Old Republic. In my opinion, nothing else has come close to the feeling of intense Jedi combat seen in the movies. The sequel, Jedi Academy, wasn’t bad either. It just got everything right in that regard.
Based on my impressions of the recent demo, The Force Unleashed could very well be the new king. There’s much more abilities and combos available at your fingertips. Plus, force throwing tie fighters into a group of stormtroopers is just a lot of fun. Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, the brand new main character for The Force Unleashed, is just a total badass. All of his powers are on a grander scale then what’s been seen before. It makes for one good time. Every object of the game is powered by Digital Molecular Matter, while NPCs use the Euphoria Engine, and it makes these powers seem much more exciting. People react lifelike when you grab them, while objects bend and break realistically.
Also, I’ve seen in a previous trailer and a brief scene from the game that shows the apprentice pulling a Star Destroyer down with the power of the force alone. I can’t wait to see how that all unfolds. My only concern is how this all works into the continuity. With such a powerful character, how does he fit in the grand scope of things? How could you ever challenge someone with such dominance against everyone else? Unfortunately, I won’t find out those plot elements until the game is released.
All I can say for now is that the game seems to be shaping up to be a must-have title. I can’t wait to get my hands on the final product. September 16 couldn’t come here any sooner.
Update - It seems like reviews just coming in are all fairly mixed. That's too bad. I still expect to have a full review by next week.
