DVD Review - 88 Minutes

The running time is actually 110 minutes, in case you were wondering. That’s 110 minutes of long, sloppy and inane plot development. Very rarely does a suspense thriller ever have such a poor execution. 88 Minutes stars Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Gramm, a successful and well-known forensics psychiatrist and college professor that assists with FBI cases.

Based primarily on the testimony of Dr. Gramm, a man named Jon Forster is convicted to death row for a murder connected with the Seattle Slayer serial killings. Nine years later, on the eve of Forster’s execution, another murder is discovered by authorities, which was done in the exact same manner as the Seattle Slayer. Dr. Gramm believes it is the work of a copycat killer, but doubt has been cast on his original testimony.

Later that morning, Gramm receives a call from an anonymous person that informs him that he only has 88 minutes left to live. The rest of the movie has Pacino’s character scrambling to find out the truth and weed out whoever is responsible for the plot to kill him.

Again, this movie just didn’t work. The characters are fairly cookie cutter, even somewhat annoying, and the plot is a total mess. The revelations at the end of the film are unoriginal, and you can see them coming a mile away. 88 Minutes, in a nutshell, is a lazy, uninspired movie that has a gimmicky story line.
